Hazardous Chemicals and Asbestos
Managing risks of hazardous chemicals in the workplace
Chemicals which are considered to pose a sufficient level of potential risk are defined as “hazardous chemicals” for the purpose of the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 (Cth). The Regulations contain specific obligations in relation to communicating about dangerous chemicals and the management of risks associated with hazardous chemicals. This Model Code of Practice contains practical guidance about how to comply with these obligations.

This Model Code of Practice provides an explanation of obligations in relation to the labelling of hazardous chemicals. Preparation of safety data sheets for hazardous chemicals
Safety data sheets are documents that provide information on the properties of hazardous chemicals, how they affect health and safety in the workplace and how to manage the chemical in the workplace. Importers, manufacturers and supplies of hazardous chemicals have obligations in relation to the preparation, maintenance and provision of safety data sheets. This Model Code of Practice contains information about the information that is needed in a safety data sheet, and how that information should be presented, reviewed and amended.

This Model Code of Practice provides specific guidance on identifying asbestos, or asbestos containing material in the workplace, and how best to handle the removal of that asbestos
How to manage and control asbestos in the workplace
This Model Code of Practice deals with control measures which must be implemented to manage the risks of exposure to asbestos where removal of the asbestos is not reasonably practical.
