The issues facing older Australians are not limited to financial issues and arrangements for management of their affairs in the event of incapacity.

Discrimination

Unfortunately, a common issue for older people in many societies, including Australia, is discrimination, which may be based on:

  • age;

  • responsibilities as a carer, including for an older person in need of care and support due to their age; or

  • disability, which, of course, can become more of a risk as a person ages.

See Discrimination.

Elder abuse

Awareness of, and effective systems to detect and prevent, abuse of older people is of great importance to our society. Elder abuse can take the form of physical, sexual, psychological or financial abuse, or neglect.

See Elder abuse.
